CEO's welcome

Throughout this year, the GAF team has been busy with activities and special projects to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of The George Alexander Foundation.

I am pleased to share one such project, The Little Brother, a short biographical video that documents elements of George’s remarkable life story and how his values and spirit live on through the Foundation's work. We hope you enjoy viewing the above video.

As 2022 and the Foundation's 50th year ends, it is heartwarming to remember how our community came together to celebrate this momentous milestone.

In July, the GAF team held an online workshop, Creating a Legacy, for the Foundation's scholars, fellows, and alums. The workshop was facilitated by Wake by Reach, our new partner for designing and delivering GAF events. Its titular theme recognised George Alexander's legacy and our community's bright futures, and we were delighted to hear our guest speaker Daisy Pearce, a trailblazing pioneer of Australian Women's Football, speak on this subject.

In November, the Foundation's Board of Governors hosted a 50th Anniversary Commemorative Dinner at The Ian Potter Queen's Hall, State Library Victoria. The evening celebrated the scholarship and fellowship program partnerships the Foundation has forged and the resulting community of practice. Thank you to all our partner institution staff who could join us, and a special thanks to the evening's keynote speaker, Professor Alec Cameron, Vice-Chancellor and President of RMIT University.

The evening also featured speeches from GAF alum community members Brenda McKinty and Michael Dal Zotto, who generously shared their respective scholar and fellow experiences. I encourage you all to watch the recordings of these speeches below.

It has been a joy to come together with our GAF community in a variety of ways to acknowledge and celebrate the first 50 years of George Alexander’s legacy. I believe George would be proud of how the Foundation has grown since 1972 and the community it has created.

Lastly, I have recently announced my decision to resign from my position as Chief Executive Officer of The George Alexander Foundation; my tenure ceasing in late February 2023.

I want to express my gratitude to the Foundation's Board, our team of dedicated staff, and our community of scholars, fellows, and Program Partner Institutions. It has been a privilege to meet so many impressive and ambitious GAF scholars and fellows throughout my seven years as CEO of The George Alexander Foundation.

I leave this rewarding role knowing that the Foundation's management is in the capable hands of Mairead Phillips, Program Manager, ably supported by Nina Beer, Communications and Engagement Coordinator.

With a mix of sadness and excitement for the future, for the last time as CEO of this wonderful Foundation, I wish you a safe and joyous festive season, surrounded by those you love, wherever you are and however you celebrate.
