Vale Professor Emma Johnston AO

It is with deep sadness that The George Alexander Foundation Governors and staff acknowledge the news of the passing of Professor Emma Johnston.

Professor Johnston joined The George Alexander Foundation in September 2021 and made extraordinary contributions during her short time as a Governor.

A highly awarded scientist, educator and communicator, Professor Johnston built her academic career at UNSW where she served as Dean of Science and as Professor of Marine Ecology and Ecotoxicology. Her studies focus on the impacts of human activities in marine ecosystems and how society can build ecological resilience. In February 2025, Professor Johnston commenced as the University of Melbourne's 21st (and first female) Vice-Chancellor.

As an accomplished marine scientist, Emma was a passionate advocate for education and its power to unleash potential in young people. She was strongly engaged with the GAF scholarship and fellowship programs that aim to provide educational and mentorship opportunities for the next generation.

Within the Foundation, Emma was valued not only for her thoughtful and strategic insights but also for her mentorship, warmth and generosity. She shared her time freely with staff and fellow Governors, enriching every conversation with her energy, wisdom and clarity of thought. Her dedication to environmental stewardship inspired all who worked with her. Her impact will continue to shape our governance, and her influence will be felt in our work for many years to come.

Our thoughts are with Emma's husband, Sam; her children, Amelia and Antonin; and all of her family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time.
