The George Alexander Foundation Undergraduate Scholarship Program commenced at James Cook University in 2018 to support undergraduate students from rural and regional areas.
Many of the university's students are from rural and regional areas, given its two regional-based campuses in Townsville and Cairns, and require support to attend university. The university's emphasis on ecology and environmental research also strongly aligns with the Foundation's two principal focuses: the environment and education.
Five scholarships are awarded annually, each valued at $24,000 and paid in instalments during the scholar's degree.
The scholarships are open to commencing full-time students from a rural or regional location studying at either of the university's regional campuses.
All GAF scholarships recognise students who can demonstrate academic merit, community involvement and leadership capability.
