The George Alexander Foundation Relocation and Living Support Scholarship Program commenced at the University of Tasmania in 2013. The Scholarship Program was established in recognition of the barriers students from regional and rural areas face upon pursuing higher education.
Approximately 40 per cent of students at the University of Tasmania have relocated to pursue their studies. The entire state of Tasmania, including the capital city Hobart, is classified as regional or remote Australia.
Seven scholarships are awarded annually, each valued at $24,000 and paid in instalments during the scholar's degree.
The scholarships are open to Tasmanians who are commencing a full-time undergraduate degree and who must move away from home to attend the University of Tasmania.
All GAF scholarships recognise students who can demonstrate academic merit, community involvement and leadership capability.
